Stray Cat Theatre unleashes Season 8
September 25 - October 10, 2009
Blackbird by David Harrower
Directed by Ron May
He went to jail. She went home.
One of the more talked-about and controversial plays of the past decade, David Harrower's Blackbird has been featured on many American and London critics' top 10 lists and received the 2007 Olivier Award for Best New Play. Based on a true story, this powerful, volatile piece begins when Una shows up unexpectedly at the office of Ray, forcing Ray to come to terms with the effects of their past relationship. Una pulls him into a brutal encounter that is gripping, surprising and utterly unforgettable. How better to kick off a season Stray Cat style than with a pull-no-punches evening of theatre you aren’t soon to forget.
*Please Note -- This production contains strong adult content.
December 4 - 19, 2009
Speech & Debate by Stephen Karam
Directed by Ron May
Sex, Lies and Podcasts with a George Michael soundtrack.
Even though they go to the same school, misfits Solomon, Diwata and Howie have never met…until a shocking sex scandal involving one of their teachers throws them together through an unexpected chain of events. When one of them sets out to expose the truth, their individual secrets become currency, the stakes skyrocket, and the trio’s connection grows deeper in this fiercely funny dark comedy with music. Written by one of the co-writers of last season’s columbinus, Speech & Debate is a wickedly funny new comedy that reminds us that sometimes you need to crank up the music, strip down to a nude body stocking, make like Martha Graham, and just let it all out!
*Please Note -- This one, you can bring your mother-in-law to, at least if she's into George Michael.
February 12 - 27, 2010
The Play About the Naked Guy by David Bell
Directed by Damon Dering
Where’s the beef?
Sex sells -- but at what price? The Integrity Players, an off-off Broadway theatre company dedicated to faithfully presenting the 'lesser known' classics, is on the brink of shuttering. When a trio of artistically questionable though financially successful impresarios, responsible for such stage hits as "Naked Boys Running Around Naked" and "Drunk Frat Boys Making Porn", offer to help save their company, an epic and hilarious battle between commercialism and artistic allegiance ensues. Appropriately enough, we’re bringing in Nearly Naked’s Damon Dering to helm all the tasty, trashy fun of this merciless satire of the age old fight between art and commerce.
*Please Note -- This production contains nudity and adult content.
April 16 - May 8, 2010
12th Night of the Living Dead by Brian MacInnis Smallwood
Directed by Cale Epps
Romero and Juliet.
Believe it. We’re actually doing Shakespeare. But we’re doing it Stray Cat style! How’s that you say? Well...with zombies. Lots and lots of zombies! When a strange meteor smashes into that famous ship en route to Illyria, the bodies pile up even faster than the romantic complications. Can true love conquer being turned into a zombie? Can a zombie be made to understand the affairs of the heart…without eating it? Stray Cat provides all the answers in this irreverently, insanely gory riff on The Bard’s classic.
*Please Note -- For this show, the front row will likely be a ‘splash zone’. Just saying.
